The video here displays contemporary Indian Art which signifies the modern Indian booming economy. The exhibits seen in this Art gallery are very much raw and real. A group of Delhi students walk into India’s first contemporary art gallery and as you can imagine their visit is of historic in nature.

This is the Delhi Foundation gallery which is supporting 7000 pieces of contemporary Indian Art Work. People need to realize that there are other art forms which are been practiced in India. The goal of this exhibition is to attract the emerging Indian modern youth through new media, videos, news and photograph. Many issues to address would be India’s nuclear program, environmental issues, violence as well as ethnic profiling.

The problem with the young Indians now days are they just don’t relate to India’s traditional public art and regard them as too old and stuffy.

It is a common sight in Hindu quarters of town and villages to find young maidens in pretty costumes and with cheerful faces engaged every morning soon after sunrise, in drawing designs called Kolam on the floor in front of each and every one of the houses all along the street, scattering deftly pinches of a white powder.

Formed all along the street on either side under the well trained hands of Hindu maidens, they indeed present a sight at once unique and admirable to a foreigner anxious to learn the manners and customs of the people of the country of his sojourn; nor are they without any interest to one even if he be not a foreigner if he is but aesthetically inclined.

Such artistic designs undoubtedly signify the aesthetic taste of the Hindus. The use of pulverized grain for the purpose, besides a religious importance, has its own moral purpose to serve- to wit kindness to inferior insects. Again this long standing custom gives the requisite training in free hand drawing to the young maidens and thus it has also an educative value. These floor designs drawn daily, commonly at the entrance of every Hindu house, contain various devices and they are also connected with the prevalent ideas regarding the evil eye. In India there is a Tamil proverb which says, “If one can hide oneself under a small mat another can conceal himself under the kolam”.

Some of the kolam floor decoration designs are representations of chariots drawn by horses, elephants or bullocks. A few of the designs represent tanks with lotus buds and full blown and half blown lotuses floating in the water. There are also designs representing individual animals like cows, horses, bulls with horns, elephants with tusks and so on. Birds like the peacock, and portions of the buildings with steps, are also represented by some of the designs formed.During ancient Hindu times, people used rice flour decorative to form the designs and thus fed myriads of ants everyday which would otherwise get into undesirable places in the house, and prove very troublesome. To start the business of a day with the sacrifice is the Hindu motto. What other better mode of sacrifice could be suggested than this?

Here on this video you will see women of Pondicherry doing beautiful kolam designs in front of their house entrance. Its simply beautiful to watch as they decorate their kolam with precise accuracy and perfection.

To watch the video just click on the video below -

In 1894 and 1888, Ravi Varma and his younger brother C.Raja Raja Varma took a tour around India, in search of images and landscapes for inspiration. On his return from the second tour, Ravi Varma painted a batch of pictures especially for reproduction at his new press, the Picture Depot. The aristocratic orientalism in his imagery was now replaced by a little more folkish, more iconic and more marketable forms, and also seen was a crises of gender identity of contemporaneous European forms. You will find that some of the last few paintings are new which have been added by the curator of this specific video but the initial paintings are all of Ravi Varma.

Kerala holds the second place, with a large collection of archeologically important mural sites in India. Evolved as a compliment to her unique architectural style, these wall paintings are characterized by their liner accuracy, the adherence to color symbolism elaborate ornamentations and sensitive portrayal of emotions.

The tradition of painting on walls began in Kerala with the pre-historic rock paintings found in the Anjanad valley of Idukki district. Archaeologists presume that these paintings belong to different periods from upper Paleolithic period to early historic period. Rock engravings dating to the Mesolithic period have also been discovered in two regions of Kerala, at Edakkal in Wayanad and at Perimkadavila in Thiruvanathapuram district. The oldest murals in Kerala were discovered in the rock cut cave temple of Thiruvandikkara, which is now in the Kanyakumari district of Tamilnadu.

The largest Mural Painting in India is at Krishnapuram palace in Kerela. What is so special about the Krishnapuram palace? Well, this palace is located at Kayamkulam, which is 47 km from Alappuzha. The palace is a rare example of Kerela style of architecture, complete with new corridors, gabled roofs and dormer windows.

The palace was once the residence of the rulers of Kayamkulam kingdom. The Krishnapuram palace is today a protected monument under the Archaeology department. At present the palace is an archaeological museum, with the most fascinating exhibit being the 49 sq meters Gajendra Moksham (the largest single band of mural painting so far discovered in Kerala).

To see the mural paintings in Krishnapuram palace just click on the video -

The Ajanta caves are located in Maharashtra, India. So whats so special about the Ajanta caves? Well, the Ajanta caves are a series of 29 Budhist cave temples in Ajanta, India, some of which date from the 2nd century BC. These caves were carved in the 2nd century BC. These caves were used by the Budhist monks as prayer halls.

What to see? The caves are numbered from east to west, 1 through 29. A viewing platform across the river affords an excellent view of the entire Ajanta site. The natural beauty of the area makes it clear why the monks chose the site for their spiritual persuits.

Preserved inside the caves are many masterpieces of Buddhist art. Some reflect the earlier Theravada tradition of depicting the Buddha only in symbolic form such as a throne or footprints. Others, the Mahayana caves, feature colorful murals and statues depicting the life (and former lives) of the Buddha and various Bodhisattvas. The caves also depict scenes from everyday life and many include inscriptions indicating a prince or noble who gifted the cave to the monks.

Here is a short video about the Ajanta caves. To watch the video just click on the play button.

The context of her work is based on a growing collection of her photographs of landscapes and objects of the innocent, authentic and stable nature, which she continued to record at newly, discovered sites of inspiration. she scan these photographs then digitally manipulates and montages them to create composite emotive visual statements, which transcend the original photographs. the resulting digital images say something about these images beyond what is there. by employing digital visual techniques including montage, multiple exposure, and layers, my intent is for the artworks to evoke the sense of captivation and mysticism. as a body, her photomontages defy any single categorisation, just as each of my images defies literal interpretation.

This is a very interesting video to watch. There was an exhibition held at Abstract Art Gallery in Bangalore, India on paintings on Dravidian Women couple of months back. All the paintings are done by Artist Elayaraja on the women from the rustic environments of South India.

The lifelike paintings captured the natural beauty of the women involved in different household activities. The starlet sky also proved to be an apt setting for these paintings exhibited in an open gallery area.

Elayaraja is worshiped by art lovers for his traditional and realistic style. A realistic artist who enjoys portraiture and more. The visitors admired the paintings for their beauty and attractiveness.”They are absolutely beautiful. He has captured the Tamilian face absolutely to the core, the Dravidian face. Especially the typical woman from the rural areas and caught them in various moods and various activities,” said Vani Ganapathy, Dancer.

The paintings were inspired by real life charecters as the artist first photographed them before depicting them on canvas.
